T.E. Priemon – Encaustic Artist

Artist’s Statement
I am an artist who paints using a 2000-year-old painting medium used in the way the Fayum Egyptian artist used their encaustic paints for portraits, which have survived in much the same way as they were painted. I hope my paintings will survive the same test of time, and they should outside of being physically destroyed. To just think for a minute and look ahead in our minds and think of viewers thousands of years from now looking at these portraits much the way we view those Fayum Egyptian portraits and ask the same burning questions of who are the where did they come from and where did they go. These are the major questions of our existence. Perhaps my work will fill in some of their blanks to these questions.

What inspired me to paint this work was how parallel Kerouac’s work was with my ramblings of the late 60s after Woodstock. I had just separated with a dear friend…borrowed twenty-five bucks from my brother and headed to the PA turnpike to thumb it to California to meet Brad at a commune up north…Thom PriemonI was just hopping in the back of a Karman Ghia with a shaggy dog already in the backseat when this guy pokes his head in and says “you heading to California”…he said he was going to Santa Monica with his wife if I wanted to ride all the way out….As we walked back to his truck camper he said one thing…”Don’t fuck with my wife,” at which I replied “No problem”…he then put out his hand and said, “I’m Tug McGraw,” at which I shook it and replied “I’m Thom Priemon”…”He then asked if I recognized him at which I said “No” and and he went on to tell me he just won the World Series…which I replied, “I’m an artist.” I think he was taken back that I did not have a clue to who he was. It turned out to be the most exciting trip. When we got to Chicago he left me in a big sports bar with a lot of his team mates…
