ARTIST ROBERT LAVIGNE IN HIS STUDIO

ARTIST ROBERT LAVIGNE IN HIS STUDIO
San Francisco 1965

Robert LaVigne is one of the few Beat artists that was aligned with the Beat poets. Besides his own work he did poster art and graphics for Allen Ginsberg and others. In this photograph he is talking about his huge nude painting of Peter Orlovsky hanging on the wall behind me. The next time I viewed his painting of Orlovsky, thirty years later, it was hanging in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
JAMIE WEARING HIS WATTS BAND

JAMIE WEARING HIS WATTS BAND
Oakland 1965

Jamie was a friend of mine from art school. He had just returned to school after a harrowing summer in LA. While home visiting his parents, he got caught up in the Watts riots. Now he was sporting his new 'Watts band' as a survivor.
THE MIDDLE-CLASS PROTESTANT NIGHTMARE

THE MIDDLE-CLASS PROTESTANT NIGHTMARE,
STANDARD LEADER, SCOT
Oakland 1965

I was teaching a Saturday children's art class at CCAC as part of my teaching major when I was told about Scot. He was the first kid I had ever seen with long hair. In fact, I thought he was a girl at first. He told me that he was a Boy Scout. I asked him to wear his uniform to the next class the following Saturday. He did, I gave him a few drills and he proved to be a real Boy Scout. I asked him to pose for some photographs to blow some minds, he knew what I meant, and he was great and very cool.
