PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST

PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST
Berkeley 1970

Kevin is an amazing artist. He worked in advertising for less than a year and dropped out to do his own work. During that time, he designed the Italian Airlines logo and the Virginia Slims package. He went out on his own as an artist creating his own non-commercial work. I dropped the hawk into the photo in the darkroom because the shot needed more weirdness and we both liked hawks.
JESUS FREAKS

JESUS FREAKS
San Anselmo 1970

I was shooting a 4th of July parade for fun when the Jesus Freaks showed up tagging along as the last 'float.' I ran out into the street to capture this view. Do you remember the Jesus Freaks?
LESBIAN WIDOWS

LESBIAN WIDOWS
San Francisco 1970

The car and passengers were a float in the Gay Pride Day parade in San Francisco. I photographed many gays in that and other parades, but I think this photo holds the most power for me.
ON INSTRUMENTS

ON INSTRUMENTS
Oakland 1970

I stopped at this closed gas station to photograph the "Tricky Dick" sign as a social commentary. While I was looking into my camera, I heard someone coming down the sidewalk. I looked out of the corner of my eye and spotted a blind man coming toward me. I timed the shot just right to put the finishing touches on my social statement. The blind man was flying 'on instruments' and missed the danger.
