POET PHILIP LAMANTIA

POET PHILIP LAMANTIA
San Francisco 1999

Philip Lamantia was one of the first two Beat poets I read. Kenneth Patchen was the other. I loved their poetry very much. While attending a George Herms exhibit, I got a chance to meet and to photograph him. He is married to Nancy Peters, co-owner of City Lights Books.
HERMS AND LAMANTIA

HERMS AND LAMANTIA
San Francisco 1999

Beat assemblage artist George Herms is talking to Philip Lamantia about the piece on the wall. The sculpture is about Lamantia and it is dedicated to him. George Herms, is another great Beat artist I admire and always wanted to meet. In 1964, I saw a sculpture of his (I liked very much) next to Michael McClure's bed. I made the background of this photograph metallic and dimensional like Herms' work.
GEORGE HERMS AND DAVID MELTZER

GEORGE HERMS AND DAVID MELTZER
San Francisco 1999

George Herms and David Meltzer are discussing Herms' piece about David Meltzer. All the subjects of the Herms assemblage sculptures in the show were about Beat poet friends of his. I had not seen David Meltzer since 1965 at City Lights and the Last Gathering session of which he participated. I asked Meltzer if I could stalk him and he said yes.
