"These poems bring forth many thought-flavors of an examined life; they draw sustenance from a rich past while confiding an up-to-the-minute inner rhythm."
-- Yan Li, Shanghai
"The verse of Du Fu, the philosophy of Zhuangzi, and the cafe culture of Los Angeles have provided nourishment for Denis Mair's poetry. To learn about Chinese Poetry from the source, he has granted himself residencies with poets such as Meng Lang and Bei Ling.
Denis Mair has worked as a translator in Beijing, shared a house with Chinese artists in Seattle, and studied for years in a mountain temple belonging to Tiandi Jiao (a Daoist-Confucian religious group in Taiwan). His translations from Chinese include memoirs by the Buddhist monk Shih Chen-hua, an autobiography by the philosopher Feng Youlan, and fiction by China's former Minister of Culture, Wang Meng. He has taught college courses on the I Ching and Chinese poetry.
Denis Mair's poetry achieves a depth of thoughtful contemplation, rare at any time, but in especially short supply in American poetry as we turn the artificial corner of a new millennium. With the nerve to ask himself, 'What can I do to be more alive?', his route to an answer is intriguing, 'If you cannot keep up with the green edge, you will have to be wood.' Original ontological observation backed up with gentle natural judgement...indicative of the great pleasures awaiting an equally skillful reader."
