Artists throughout the ages have been fascinated with mirrored reflections ever since the ancient Greeks, once having dreamed up the myth of Sisyphus, then decided that a lifetime sentence was not as preferable as a death sentence and thus created the myth of Narcissus who, rife with hubris and the vanity of over-the-top self love, attempted to kiss his own reflection and drowned in the cool, unbiased, still waters of an idyllic pool.
In The Artist's Studio, goats and men hover about the model whose goat-like coiffure echoes their lechery as she contemplates her sensual reflection in the mirror above the bedpost. Some approach, some stand guard, some appear sated and one documents the day. ___M.M.E.
