BORN TO BE WILD
The high-school kid in this photo was a photography student of mine. I was demonstrating a low-light project to the class using a model. I have no idea where the cuffs came from but the kid in the photograph really wanted to pose with them. His mom signed a photo release and the photographs went into my stock file. Many years later he called me; he had just gotten out of prison in Texas and wanted me to write him a letter of recommendation.
MARK WITH HIS REDTAIL
Mark was a photography student of mine at Concord High School. He had a pure spirit, Mother Nature's son. He taught me how to raise a hawk and I taught him about photography. It was a balanced exchange, I learned about being and he learned about seeing.
This photograph is an example of what I like to think of as 'little altars' that people make around their home. I first noticed them when I visited Michael McClure in his place. A couple of years after taking this photograph it became a child psychology book cover (without the bottle).
