Modern Counterculture Gallery | LAWRENCE AND LARRY San Francisco 1996Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Larry Keenan are discussing Ferlinghetti's new school of art. The button reads: "Fuck art, let's dance." Ferlinghetti just finished reading his work at the de Young Museum where the Whitney Museum's Beat Culture exhibit is being shown.Photo by Lisa Keenan | | LARRY KEENAN AND TED JOANS San Francisco 1996I am a fan of Ted Joan's work. I was telling him how much I liked his small, powerful, painting of Charlie Parker that was in the Whitney Museum's Beat Culture exhibit at the de Young Museum.Photo by Lisa Keenan | | DIAMOND DAVE AND CANDY ASS San Francisco 1996I met Diamond Dave at a press preview at the de Young Museum where the Whitney Museum's Beat Culture exhibit was being shown. He said that he wanted to interview me on his radio program at his studio in the Mission district in San Francisco. Diamond Dave Whittaker is an amazing cat. His claim to fame, he told me, was that he turned Dylan on to pot. Dave is very literate; he calls into the local PBS radio station to discuss issues frequently. I showed up for the pre-interview meeting at a restaurant. He introduced me to a friend of his, Candy Ass, a band member from the Mission. |
