FIVE POINTS OF VIEW WHEN LOOKING AT A PIG
Oil on board by Oscar Bernal  20 x 26 inches  2001

What (or whom) do you think of when you find yourself confronting a pig?

The Melancholy Butcher, who holds his cleaver just out of sight, wistfully senses the pig's demise yet thinks "What a fine piece of meat!" The Doting Father sees a pig-raising project for his Red-Coated Son who, in turn, seems to have his doubts about it. The Warden, wearing what appears to be a Japanese Noh mask, wonders how it escaped and can hardly wait to get his hands on it --- Notice how he's about to climb into the arena? And perhaps the Private Eye (or his he the Criminal? —it's hard to tell) is merely thinking about a Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich? ___M.M.E.
