City Lights Books 50th Anniversary Celebration

DIANE DI PRIMA READNG AT CITY LIGHTS

DIANE DI PRIMA READING
San Francisco, 2003

Diane di Prima is reading her work on her special evening at City Lights Books. What a treat, I have never met her before. A real opportunity to see/hear her read her wonderful, insightful poetry. I was late for her performance (parking in North Beach at night is very difficult) and City Lights was closed to anymore fans. Fortunately, I was recognized and hustled upstairs to photograph her from above.

CITY LIGHTS 50TH ANNIVERSARY / CROWD

CROWD AT THE CITY LIGHTS 50TH CELEBRATION
San Francisco 2003

I went upstairs to a window that over-looked the huge crowd that had gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary. The crowd was so big that I could not get it all in the camera so I turned it vertical to give the viewer some idea.

CITY LIGHTS 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
San Francisco 2003

A crowd view from across the street. It is very similar to my landmark celebration photograph from October 2001. This time the banners by Pablo Neruda say:
TYRANNY CUTS OFF THE SINGER'S HEAD
BUT THE VOICE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WELL
RETURNS TO THE SECRET SPRINGS OF THE EARTH
AND RISES OUT OF NOWHERE THROUGH THE MOUTHS OF THE PEOPLE
This photograph also has become a postcard for City Lights Books.
