All These Sensations: 11 artworks by Lita Kenyon

Lita Kenyon

Painting
With abstract painting I’m interested in a process which operates within a personal narrative in concert with the unexpected. I paint, remove paint and repaint striving to bring forward forms, strokes and colors that singularly are incomplete but adjoined constitute a truth about their incongruity. Each painting has its own individualism.

Mixed Media/Collage
My mixed media work and collage drawings are inspired by female wrestlers. Over time the ‘girl wrestlers’ works have evolved from research and working with mid-century imagery combined with the analog collage process. The term ‘girl wrestling’ evokes a perceived yet subtle anxiety about women in general that has manifested from the woman’s suffrage movement through today. I am interested in examining this anxiety.

Lita Kenyon

In the late 1970s Lita Kenyon first attended art school studying drawing, painting, and printmaking at Columbia College, Columbia, Missouri (1980) and Northern Illinois University (1982). Today, working primarily in collage and painting, she is drawn to subjects about socially transmitted beliefs, widely repeated cultural themes and mores. Inspired by mid-century commodity culture, and wrestler imagery, her work focuses on narratives evolving as relationships from these resources unfold.
